Integrated Family of Technologies
As a leader in the field of nanomaterials technologies, Nanophase has evolved from solely a producer of nanoparticles
into an integrator of commercially scaled nanomaterial technologies focused
on market and customer applications. Nanophase Technologies Corporation manufactures a variety of
nanocrystalline powders in commercial quantities. The nanocrystalline metal
oxides typically have a mean particle size less than 100 nm, are non-porous
single crystals, have defined surface chemistry, and are chemically pure. Further
modification of these materials often involves vapor-phase coating to prepare
a surface-modified dry powder, or liquid phase processing to prepare a dispersion
that is compatible with the application. Nanophase’s family of integrated technologies economically produces
nanocrystalline materials and then nanoengineers those materials to fit customer’s
needs.

Figure 1. Nanophase development process
Nanophase’s development process is designed to produce the most
advantageous nanomaterials solution for an application. The foundation
technologies are the patented Physical Vapor Synthesis (PVS) process and patent pending NanoArc® Synthesis (NAS) process. These processes use plasma
energy to produce pure, non-agglomerated, non-porous, single-phase
metal and mixed metal oxide nanoparticles at annual capacities measured
in tens of thousands of kilograms per reactor. Nanoparticle size and
surface chemistry can be tailored for applications as the nanomaterial
is produced.
Sunscreen Formulations
Nanomaterials can act as sun blockers
to protect human skin in formulations that go on smooth, silky and
clear. Eliminating unnecessary exposure to the harmful UV rays of
the sun has increasingly become a key health concern. But now, you
can protect yourself without having to use a sticky white cream that
is noticeable on the skin. Our NanoGard® zinc oxide, which is produced under cGMP conditions and is FDA
approved for use as an active ingredient in personal care products,
can provide effective UV attenuation while maintaining clarity in
silky-smooth, non-sticky formulations. We are proud of our worldwide
exclusive relationship with BASF to market our NanoGard® zinc oxide products for sunscreen applications on a global basis.
Our NanoGard® zinc oxide products are also available with a variety of proprietary
coatings that are designed to maximize compatibility with various
formulations and bases.
Deodorant/Antiperspirant
Nanomaterials can impart antibacterial
and anti-odor functionality on human skin in powder, gel, stick or
spray underarm products that go on smooth without plugging the spray
nozzle, caking or staining while maintaining clarity. The market trends
for deodorants and antiperspirants are toward clear and highly effective
formulations that are mild and non-irritating. NanoGard® zinc oxide or silver doped zinc oxides appear to be naturals for this application.
Our NanoGard® zinc oxide, which is produced under cGMP conditions and is FDA
approved for use as an active ingredient in personal care products,
can provide effective odor and bacterial control while maintaining
clarity in silky-smooth, non-sticky formulations. The anti-irritant
properties of zinc oxide are an added benefit! Silver doped zinc oxide may offer an enhancement in odor fighting
antibacterial properties.
Oral Care
Nanomaterials can be introduced
into a variety of oral care products to impart antimicrobial and anti-irritant
properties without sacrificing flow, texture or color. Dental pastes,
creams and cleaners need to thoroughly clean teeth and gums, and leave
a clean and crisp feeling in the mouth afterwards. Incorporating NanoGard®
zinc oxide into such formulations provides antibacterial and
anti-irritant properties while minimizing effects on color, flow,
stickiness and wash-away characteristics. NanoGard® zinc oxide is produced under cGMP conditions and is FDA approved
for use as an active ingredient in personal care products.
Shaving/Depilatory
Products
Incorporation of nanomaterials in
shaving and depilatory products offer improved anti-irritant properties
without sacrificing flow and texture properties. The market trends
for shaving creams and depilatory products are toward milder and less
irritating products. NanoGard® zinc oxide, when incorporated into skin application products,
has an anti-irritant effect. The use of NanoGard® zinc oxide brings the additional benefits of clarity, non-stickiness,
and non-thickening and will not clog a spray nozzle. NanoGard® zinc oxide is produced under cGMP conditions and is FDA approved
for use as an active ingredient in personal care products.
Foot Powder
Nanomaterials can impart antibacterial
and anti-odor functionality on human skin in powder or spray formulations
that go on smooth without plugging of the spray nozzle or caking.
Zinc oxide is well recognized as an antimicrobial and odor absorbing
product. It has been safely used for years in diaper creams and other
soothing ointments. Our NanoGard® zinc oxide, which is produced under cGMP conditions and is FDA
approved for use as an active ingredient in personal care products,
can provide effective odor and bacterial control while maintaining
clarity in silky-smooth, non-sticky formulations.

Nanophase has worked diligently for years to develop expertise
in dispersing nanomaterials in water, polar organics and non-polar
organics. We offer most of our products in one or more standard
dispersions. We also offer the service of dispersing a nanomaterial
in the bulk medium of your choice as long as it is of low viscosity,
non toxic, and has a flash point greater than 100°F.
