Background

Buhler Grinding & Dispersion, a business unit of the Buhler Technology Group, is a leading solution provider in the area of process equipment for wet grinding and dispersion applications. Bühler is a global leader in the supply of process engineering solutions, especially production technologies for making foods and engineering materials. The Group is present in over 140 countries and has about 6,600 employees. In fiscal 2007, Buhler generated sales of USD 1.7 Billion worldwide.

PML2 Laboratory Media Mill

The latest Buhler innovation is the new PML2 laboratory media mill, offering a unique design and ultimate flexibility. The core is the drive unit, on which several proved Buhler process zones in a variety of ceramic- and steel executions can be mounted. Smaller versions of the popular SuperTex®, SuperFlow® and Cosmo® mill are available in sizes ranging from 0.3 to 1.2 liter grind chamber volume. Thanks to a 180º circle rotation drive unit including the process zone, horizontal as well as vertical operation modes are possible. The versatility of PML2 machine base will make this the most popular media mill for research and development on the market.

Buhler Teaming Up with AVEKA

But equipment is not all that Buhler has to offer. In a continued effort to provide customers with more than just equipment, Buhler has teamed up with AVEKA Inc. to operate a new shared development and demonstration laboratory in North America for wet grinding and dispersion applications.

Buhler Inc in Plymouth, MN, the American affiliate of the Buhler Technology Group, and Aveka Inc. in Woodbury, MN a company specializing in particle technology, have signed an agreement on the joint operation of a development and demonstration laboratory. Its purpose will be to offer North American customers active in the fields of wet grinding and dispersion technology a high level of competent on-site support. In this cooperation, Buhler will make the complete product portfolio of the Grinding & Dispersion business unit available for test activities including the new PML-2 universal laboratory platform and its latest MicroMedia micro-grinding-media technology for nanogrinding applications. Aveka will utilize this cooperation to make its extensive capabilities in particle measurement techniques, process engineering, and contract manufacturing accessible to Buhler customers. The shared engineering laboratory operated by the two companies will be set up on the Aveka premises in Woodbury, MN, and is now ready to welcome customers for service. In a separate building section, a complete infrastructure is available, including – among other things – facilities for material logistics, meeting rooms, and analytical labs.

This cooperation will enable the two partners to offer their customers an even wider range of process equipment, toll production and product development services and even more expert capabilities than previously available. In addition to the existing applications in printing inks, coatings, and products for the electronics industry, one of the main goals is to develop new markets for ink-jet inks and nanodispersion materials. For the future, Buhler and Aveka expect additional synergies to be generated by the combination of joint capabilities and competencies.

The new engineering laboratory will be operated jointly. Development and demonstration tests can be booked with immediate effect through Aveka and Buhler.
