Enhanced Bone Repair Polymers by Modification with Nanoparticles

Bone glues enhance bone attachment in orthopedic surgery or dental applications. The adhesion strength to bone of these polymers can be drastically increased by the incorporation of amorphous calcium phosphate nanoparticles (a-TCP, see Figs. 1 and 2).
These nanocomposite materials show a 3 times higher adhesion strength compared to pure commercial bone glue (see Fig. 3). A-TCP nanoparticles are only accessible by high temperature processes with ultra-fast cooling times. Flame spray synthesis is ideally suited to obtain such highly reactive nanoparticles due to the flexibility of the production process.
A-TCP nanoparticles and other biomedical and degradable nanoparticles are commercially available at Switzerland based Nanograde Llc.. In addition to highly pure A-TCP nanoparticles, the composition can be altered with additional doping elements. Nanograde’s strong technology and knowhow allows customization of nanoparticle compositions and dispersions.
