Introduction

Prevac offers a range of analytical surface analysis systems (Figure 1). The XPS/UPS/ARPES systems offered by Prevac are ideal for high sensitivity electronic structure analysis in:

  • Study of impurities and grain boundaries
  • Elemental and chemical composition of specimens
  • Measuring the surface electronic properties
  • Gather bonding and chemical-state information
  • determining doping by performing depth profiles
  • Elemental distributions

The XPS/UPS/ARPES System

Based on the application, the XPS/UPS/ARPES system employs either UV source UVS40A2 or X-ray source RS40B1 for exciting electrons from the surface. The UV source has a light capillary of below 1.5mm diameter, with high intensity flux of over 1 * 1016 photons/s*sr and <1° beam divergence. The X-ray Source 40B1 exhibits an optimal X-ray power Al: 600W/Mg: 400W. The UV source can be operated with different gases, including hydrogen, xenon, argon, krypton, neon, and helium. It is also possible to adapt the UV source to laser and synchrotron light.

The XPS/UPS/ARPES system is coupled with hemispherical analyzer with an energy resolution of below 1.5 meV and angular resolution of 0.05° to perform multi-technique surface analyses. The analyzer may be integrated with 2D or 3D spin detectors. Prevac provides many other different sources of excitation and charge neutralization. The system’s analytical part is made exclusively from the non-magnetic materials.

Pumping and Bakeout System

The flexible pumping configuration is on the basis of latest generation UHV pumps. The system is coupled with an easy to install, handy bakeout tent. The baking control system is attached and interlocked with all system devices and fitted with automatic programmable temperature and time controller.

Main Chamber

XPS/UPS/ARPES systems are on the basis of a mu-metal main chamber with high resolution hemispherical electron analyzer that can be fitted with twin anode and/or monochro-mated X-ray source and UV source. Additional ports facilitate mounting of a 3D spin detector.

Transfer System and Manipulator

Prevac provides the intuitive linear or radial distribution transfer systems, which ensure rapid transfer between chambers. A wide choice of manipulators is available, including the proven liquid helium version that is capable of achieving 4.8K with 5-axis motion (7K for 6-axis, open cycle). Polar rotation is +/-180° or 360°, while out of plane sample tilt is +/-300. They can be heated up to 400K.

Preparation Chamber

Sample preparation chamber has the broad choice of sources for sample preparation (cleaning, heating) and deposition methods that can be configured individually for each application. Ports for further methods are included in the standard version. Four- or six-axis manipulator with heating (1700 K) and cooling (90 K) can also be accommodated.

Load Lock and Storage Chamber

XPS/UPS/ARPES systems are fitted with a load lock system for rapidly introducing and processing (heating/degassing) samples. The optional storage chamber can be utilized to load and pre-prepare up to 10 samples.

Electronics

Prevac offers a comprehensive range of microprocessor controlled, high stability device and power electronics modules, which yield completely interlocked system control with the maximum possible resolution and stability. Standalone operation is also convenient with the new generation of color-rich touchscreen displays.

Software

RAPID SE Software offers complete computer control for pump interlocks, gauges and valves. It also allows planning and controlling of complicated steps such as sample preparation or deposition. User personalized control panel consists of intuitive schemes and graphics, including diagrams of the entire system. Online access for controlling setup and mobile monitoring is standard.
