Introduction to Colloidal Gold

Colloidal gold has found use as a key constituent in several biomedical applications, ranging from catalysis and diagnostic assays to in-vivo tumour targeting. The exotic optical properties and shape and crystal structure uniformity make colloidal gold a versatile nanomaterial providing several benefits.

Cytodiagnostics’ Colloidal Gold

Cytodiagnostics uses a proprietary synthesis technique for producing spheroidal gold colloids with superior quality and high uniformity in shape and size, compared to competitive products.

This article demonstrates the superiority of Cytodiagnostics gold nanoparticles by presenting the results of a comparison against a leading competitor in terms of different parameters and categories.

The comparison involved the characterization of two different gold nanoparticle preparations of different sizes and shapes. Figures 1 and 2 depict the representative images from TEM measurements comparing 30nm and 60nm sizes between Cytodiagnostics and leading competitor.

The images clearly show the superior size and shape monodispersity of Cytodiagnostics gold nanoparticles over the leading competitor.

Comparison of Size

A comparison of average particle size as well as the distribution data (coefficient of variance (CV) and standard deviation) is given in Figure 3 and Table 1. The proprietary synthesis technique used by Cytodiagnostics yields superior size monodispersity of colloidal gold nanoparticles compared to the competitive product.

Cytodiagnostics 30nm colloidal gold nanoparticles’ actual size is 29.49nm with a standard deviation of 2.87nm (10% CV), whereas the actual measured size of the competitive product is 31.48nm with a standard deviation of 3.7nm (12% CV). A similar trend is observed also in the case of 60nm colloidal gold nanoparticles, as summarized in Table 1.

Comparison of Shape

The results summarized in Table 2 clearly show the much better shape uniformity of Cytodiagnostics gold nanoparticles when compared to the competitive product. The aspect ratio (length/width) of Cytodiagnostics gold nanoparticles is far better than the competitor’s particles, with a high level of monodispersity. Furthermore, Cytodiagnostics gold nanoparticles are 100% spherical in shape when compared to the competitor’s particles, which have 89.7% and 92.4% spheroids for 30nm and 90nm particles, respectively, and the remaining particles shaped as hexagons, pentagons, triangles etc., as shown in Figure 4.

The high shape consistency of Cytodiagnostics gold nanoparticles reduces the inconsistency within an assay, for instance, by facilitating control over the available surface area and allowing protein absorption to the gold. This results in a higher performance assay at a lower cost.

Conclusion

The results clearly demonstrate the superiority of Cytodiagnostics gold nanoparticles over the leading competitive product in all respects.
