Background

Prof. Shapter is the deputy director of the South Australian Research Facility (SARF) which is focused on microscopy and microanalysis. SARF is one of the nodes of the Australian Microscopy and Microanalysis Research Facility (AMMRF). Prof. Shapter is also Director of the Centre of Expertise in Energetic Materials (CEEM) which is a Flinders based centre funded to examine novel aspects of energetic material chemistry.

Prof. Shapter's group works in the areas of biosensors, nanotubes and biological membranes. He has given invited talks on his research in various universities and at international conferences around the world. He is the co-author of 64 original articles in highly respected, peer-refereed internationally renowned journals. He has been invited to contribute book chapters on the use of nanotubes in the biological arena and another chapter on nanotube treatments.

Prof. Shapter was the conference chair an SPIE conference on Smart Materials, Nano- and Micro-Smart Systems held in Adelaide in December 2006. He was a symposium chair for the ARC Nanotechnology Network ICONN conferences held in Brisbane in 2006 and Melbourne in 2008. He is also a referee for several journals including top international journals such as Journal of the American Chemical Society and Nanotechnology.
