Explaining the Mysterious Nature of Glass

Archaeological evidence suggests that glass was first made in the Middle East sometime around 3000 B.C. However, almost 5,000 years later, scientists are still perplexed about how glassy materials make the transition from a molten state to a solid. Richard Wool, professor of chemical engineering at UD, thinks he has the answer.

In early September, a German delegation visited the companies Panasonic and Omron and the Nano Clusters in Nagano and Osaka. The exchange had been organized by IVAM in cooperation with the Japanese Micromachine Center.

Instrument to Provide Real-Time Images of Biological Processes

Researchers at the University of New Mexico were recently awarded a three-year, $1.1 million grant from the W.M. Keck Foundation to support a research program within the Department of Physics. The program, titled "A Facility to Perform Bio-molecular Imaging; Real Time Phase Mapping of Biological Dynamics," is designed to provide real-time images of biological processes at nano and pico scale resolutions, a feat never achieved before.
