Magnetic Heads with Ultra-High Resolution for Next-Generation Hard Disk Drives

At nano tech 2009, magnetic heads with ultra-high resolution for next-generation hard disk drives were presented, from NEDO's project on "Development of Nano Narrow Magnetic Wall Type Hard Disk Drive Magnetic Head Device by Self-Organizing Nano Patterning Method." Current hard disk drives have a recording density of 200-300 gigabits per square inch. But Super Hi-definition broadcasting, to start around 2015, will require surface recording density to be ten times higher, at two terabits per square inch. Accordingly, the NEDO project has developed magnetic head elements with ultra-high sensitivity and ultra-high resolution. This nano-scale magnetic domain structure is formed using a self-assembly nano-patterning process.
