Asylum Research: Point Defects on Calcite Imaged Using Cypher AFM

This short movie from Asylum Research shows defects on the cleavage plane of calcite moving around, appearing and disappearing. Sensitive methods possible on their Cypher AFM have allowed imaging of these defects, which seem to exist in the hydration layer. It is likely that these visible defects are caused by substitution defects in the calcite surface, which would otherwise be too small to image directly.
