Denton Vacuum, a provider of thin film technology systems for production, has dispatched the first of its Altor series of sputtering system to a well-known cardiac rhythm management (CRM) products maker. Cardiac leads are vital components of biomedical devices such as defibrillators and pacemakers.

The Altor system will coat the cardiac leads with electrically active deposits. The increase in the world’s aged population has driven the growth for CRM products. Hence, CRM manufacturers need the capability to coat complex three-dimensional components with thin films that fulfill the requirements such as biocompatibility, uniformity, electrical impedance and wear.
The Altor series is based on the company’s Discovery platform. The system can support a host of medical implant devices like cardiac stents, cardiac leads and orthopedic implants that need biocompatible and protective coatings. The incorporated custom-engineered material handling systems makes it a suitable production platform in improving productivity and ensuring uniformity of film deposition. The Altor series is a result of a long-standing collaboration between Denton, its technology partner and a customer. Denton is also offering a host value-added services to this customer that includes installation, system start-up, process set-up and operational training.
Rod Moore, President of Denton Vacuum, stated that the Altor Series fulfilled the multiple needs of highly reliable sputtering platform with software based control and verification to comply with FDA facility certification standards, safety of workers and other ergonomic standards. He expects Denton sales to set new records this year.
