National Institute for Nanotechnology Deemed Key Member of Edmonton’s Regional Technical Alliance

The Edmonton Economic Development Corporation (EEDC) that runs the Edmonton Research Park (ERP) is a member of the Greater Edmonton Regional Technology Alliance.

EEDC’s Executive Director for economic growth and development, Mike Wo, highlighted the important role played by fellow member, the National Institute for Nanotechnology (NINT), in the Regional Alliance.

NINT is located on the main campus of the University of Alberta. It carries out advance research in the field of nanotechnology. More specifically, the institute researches ways to integrate nanomaterials and nanoscale devices to nanosystems that find practical application outside the lab such as a lab-on-chip device to perform blood glucose tests for diabetes. In order to understand the dimensions at the nano level, one can consider a human hair strand whose width would measure about 100,000 nanometers.

NINT assists nanotechnology firms in Edmonton with securing license and launching their products in the market. The Institute has provided access to its research facilities and researchers’ expertise to other members of the Regional Technology Alliance.

Members of the Alliance apart from NINT and EEDC are the National Research Council's Industrial Research and Assistance Program, Northern Alberta Business Incubator, TR Labs, Startup Edmonton, Business Link, novaNAIT and TEC Edmonton which is a joint venture between the University of Alberta and ERP.
