e2v Offers Extended-Reliability PowerQUICC II Pro Communications Processors

Extended-reliability versions of Freescale's PC837x PowerQUICC® II Pro communications processor PC8378 and PC8379 are now available from e2v for networking applications in aerospace, defence and demanding outdoor environments.

The PowerQUICC® II Pro PC8378 and PC8379 processors deliver industry leading performance in the sub 5 watt power category. They are built on a Power Architecture® e300c4s processor core -- operating at frequencies of up to 800MHz -- with PCI Express® and serial-ATA (SATA) controllers, as well as dual Gigabit Ethernet controllers. These processors are built on Freescale's 90nm technology to deliver reliability and high-performance, in a very low power envelope.

These sub 5W communications processors are well-suited for aerospace and defence communications systems and are also fully software compatible with PC603e, allowing for easy system upgrades without compromising reliability and at minimal software qualification cost.

"We are pleased to add PC8378 and PC8379 communications processors to our portfolio of high reliability processors. A broad range of communications applications in the aerospace and defence industries can now benefit from these sub 5W devices as a cost-effective system-on-chip solution, offering an adequately sized computation capacity together with useful integrated PCI-Express and SATA features," commented Eric Marcelot, Head of Semiconductor Marketing at e2v, adding "this is part of our long term agreement with Freescale and will be embedded within our Semiconductor Lifecycle Management programme (SLiM™), securing long term availability."

The PC8378 and PC8379 communications processors are manufactured on Freescale's 90nm CMOS on SOI process technology and are now available in an extended temperature range (-40°C to +125°C) and in a FC-PBGA 689 pin package. e2v is also planning to support non-RoHS packaged versions with SnPb lead finish and the full military temperature range (-55°C to +125°C).
