Svetlana-Optoelectronics Work on High-Efficiency LEDs Nominated for RUSNANOPRIZE 2013

Scientists from Svetlana-Optoelectronics JSC in Saint-Petersburg (Russia) have developed industrial technology aimed to significantly enhance the efficiency of LEDs. The development has been nominated for the prestigious RUSNANOPRIZE 2013 international award.

The energy consumption for lighting by the average citizen in Europe has been increased by more than 12,000 times for the last 200 years. The overall world lighting costs exceed 40 billion US dollars yearly. Substitution of conventional illumination sources by LEDs – Light-Emitting Diodes – is the common trend in many industrial countries, including Russia.

It is supposed that substitution of 50% of lighting with LEDs can save more than 100 billion dollars for the world economy by 2020. One of the main issues in the way of this scale of substitution is the efficiency-to-cost ratio for most of commercial LED-based lighting: the cheapest devices have very low efficiency with a short lifetime, and longer-lived devices with high efficiency exist on the market but are very expensive.

Svetlana-Optoelectronics, JSC, is a company located in Saint Petersburg (Russia). The company’s efforts have been primarily focused for a long time on the development of new technologies for LEDs, as well as manufacturing and marketing of a wide range of industrial solutions for LED-based lighting.

In collaboration with the Saint Petersburg Electrotechnical University “LETI”, the project has been realized for production of LED devices with quantum efficiency up to 60%. “This is very good result, - says Dmitry Zakheim, one of the applicants to the RUSNANOPRIZE 2013 Award. We worked in two main directions. One was the optimization of the nano-scaled quantum wells in InAlGaN/GaN materials. Another was optimization of the light transducing system”.

The joint project between Svetlana-Optoelectronics, JSC and LETI fits well with the RUSNANOPRIZE Award requirements, as it has a serious scientific base in the nanometer-scaled material structuring, and successful commercialization on a large scale. Alexei Mockhnatkin, CEO Svetlana-Optoelectronics explained the company’s interest to the Award nomination:

“We have developed a really good product. Only in the first half year period of 2013 we produced almost 5 million LEDs with very active sales in Russia. Now we are going to enter the European market with our solutions for industrial illumination and I hope we are able to suggest competitive price for it. Nomination to the prestigious international award is one of the important points in our strategy”.
