Renowned researcher in ultrasonic engineering, Dr Junhui Hu, has published his latest book "Ultrasonic Micro/Nano Manipulations " with World Scientific.
Ultrasonic manipulation of tiny objects is an emerging technique to trap, concentrate, separate, rotate, orientate, position, remove, pattern, stretch, and peel off tiny objects, which is done with the linear and nonlinear effects of ultrasonic waves in liquid and solid. It is particularly attractive for the applications which require little selectivity to the properties of manipulated samples, low temperature rise at manipulation points, and manipulating devices with simple structure, light weight, small volume, and electromagnetic noise-free operation. However, for a long time, researchers have only used the standing wave in ultrasonic manipulations, which has greatly limited the diversity of manipulation functions of the ultrasonic method.
A team of researchers from the State Key Lab of Mechanics and Control of Mechanical Structures, China, introduced innovative strategies for ultrasonic manipulation by employing various kinds of acoustic streaming fields, the rotary travelling wave around a vibration nodal point, a decrease in the cohesive force among molecules of sonicated liquid, etc., making the functions and samples of ultrasonic manipulation diversified.
The book "Ultrasonic Micro/Nano manipulations", summarizing these strategies, provides new principles and useful devices structures for micro/nano manipulations, which may widen the application range of ultrasonic manipulation technique greatly. Being different from other researchers, Hu's research group utilizes novel physical principles such as the sound induced flow, progressive wave around a vibration nodal point, and decrease in the cohesive force among molecules of sonicated liquid, to handle micro/nano objects. It has been used in the measurement of nanowire property, separation of micro particles in air in small scale, removal of dust on the surface of solar panels, etc.
