Paul S. Weiss, distinguished professor of chemistry and materials science and engineering, has been named the Jacques Beaulieu Chair at the Centre for Energy, Materials and Telecommunications of the Institut National de la Recherche Scientifique (INRS) in Montreal for 2016-2017.

Weiss will receive a $70,000 award and will visit the INRS to give a series of lectures with the goal of establishing lasting scientific collaborations.
Weiss has also been named honorary professor at Soochow University in China, and appointed to the board of their new nanoscience college.
One of the world's top nanoscientists, Weiss is a member and former director of the California NanoSystems Institute at UCLA. He leads an interdisciplinary research group comprised of chemists, physicists, biologists, materials scientists, bioengineers, electrical and mechanical engineers, mathematicians and computer scientists. His group focuses on atomic-scale chemical, physical, optical, mechanical and electronic properties of surfaces and supramolecular assemblies, probing the ultimate limits of miniaturization. Weiss and his students have developed new techniques to expand applicability and chemical specificity of scanning probe microscopies and have applied these and other tools to the study of catalysis, self- and directed assembly, biomolecular systems and molecular- and nanoscale devices. He serves as the founding editor-in-chief of the leading nanoscience journal, ACS Nano.
