Centre for Process Innovation (CPI) - national centre for emerging technologies

Cenamps – an International Centre of Excellence for Nanotechnology, Micro and Photonic SystemsThe Centre for Process Innovation (CPI) was established by One NorthEast, The Regional Development Agency as a vital component in the Strategy for Success to enhance the Region's strengths in Healthcare & Health Sciences, Energy & Environment and Process Innovation.

We are an independent and entrepreneurial organisation developing and commercialising small-scale technologies.

The North East of England is home to many established and growing advanced manufacturing companies in Semiconductors, Photonics,

Advanced Functional Materials, as well as Chemicals & Process Industries.

The Region is proud of its five universities whose scientific and technological strengths include: Durham (physics, chemistry & engineering), Newcastle (biological sciences), Northumbria (metrology & design), Sunderland (digital media) and Teesside (bio-sensors).

CPI operates internationally to stimulate innovation in the North East of England, strengthening the region's economic foundation, R&D capabilities and performance through the creation of high-tech jobs and new business opportunities in emerging small-scale technologies.

Our technology footprint reflects the new opportunities offered by three key converging technologies: micro/nano structured materials, biosciences & biotechnologies and information & communication technologies. These will serve society and consumers through applications in:

  • Flexible Functional Materials
  • Ambient Intelligence & Smart Environments
  • Enhancing Quality of Life
  • Improving Healthcare & Well-being

CPI integrates the commercialisation value chain by bringing industry, academia and R&D facilities together to capitalise on new product innovations. We:

  • fund and support new collaborative research themes in our technology footprint- see www.uk-cpi.com for current project profiles
  • establish and promote spin out and start up companies
  • manage open access R&D facilities for design, prototyping and low-medium volume manufacturing
  • access public and private sector funding
  • participate in European collaborative R&D innovations (including FP5, FP6 and in the shaping of FP7)
  • provide interim project management
  • design commercialisation vehicles for late stage and market ready products
  • manage and commercialise Intellectual Property
  • forge new business alliances throughout the world

NanoVic - A New Organization for the Commercialization of Australian Nanotechnologies

NanoVic - a new organization for the commercialization of Australian nanotechnologiesNanotechnology Victoria ("NanoVic") is a new company formed by the Government of Victoria and four of its leading nanotechnology research providers to accelerate the commercialisation of nanotechnology in Australia . After 6 months in operation it has already invested significantly to upgrade the State's capabilities, and is leading exciting initiatives for the translation of nanotechnology into the marketplace. Within Australia , NanoVic is now regarded as a model for research commercialization across multiple institutes.

NanoVic essentially operates as a leveraged contract research & development company with a focus on nanotechnology developments. Its research capabilities are those of its Members - Monash, RMIT, and Swinburne Universities and the CSIRO - and it has seed funding of A$12 million from the Victorian Government. It has recently invested $3.5 million in critical infrastructure and equipment to further nanotechnology research in Victoria , and is now managing 5 demonstration projects in a variety of industries.

Its key activities are:

  • Attracting investment to support research and commercial applications of nanotechnologies in Victoria .
  • Assembling outstanding research teams to address identified industry solutions.
  • Leading commercialisation of emerging nanotechnologies with industrial partners.
  • Supporting and facilitating awareness and learning programs that promote an understanding of nanotechnology and its benefits.

Nanotechnology Victoria 's purpose is clear: to develop new sources of competitive advantage for existing and emerging industries in Victoria and Australia , using advances in nanoscience and nanotechnology.

Nanotechnology Victoria seeks industry and investment partners for its projects. We will develop partnerships with companies, investors, universities and researchers who are interested in contributing to or benefiting from key projects using Australian nanotechnology, or introducing nanotechnologies to the Australian market.
