"The Alivisatos Group is a research group at UC Berkeley and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Our work is in the field of nanoscience and nanotechnology, studying materials with sizes on the order of one billionth of a meter (one nanometer).
When material dimensions reach the nanometer scale, quantum mechanical and thermodynamic properties that are insignificant in larger, everyday materials dominate, causing these nanomaterials to display new and interesting properties. Our work seeks to understand these properties and exploit them for technological applications. Currently, we are members of the Defense University Research Initiative on Nanotechnology, DURINT, funded by DARPA/AFOSR ."
