Introduction

Aerotech’s A3200 distributed motion control platform enables control of up to 32 servo, piezo, and stepper motor stages with no special communication protocols, custom software, or integration problems. The powerful A3200 control package contains a wide range of features and diagnostic abilities like single- or multi-axis Position Synchronized Output (PSO) for real-time event triggering, and advanced control features that enhance tracking error and overall process throughput.

Since piezo stages are treated as just another axis in Aerotech’s control architecture, the end result is higher-throughput systems, simple and less expensive integration, and a powerful controller in control of every element of the motion system.

The Ensemble QDe, Ensemble QL/QLe, and Ndrive QL/QLe enable one to easily network piezo drives with servo stages and perform tightly coordinated motion with all of these axes.

Advanced Tuning Tools That Are Simple To Use

Aerotech’s controllers have many advanced, yet user-friendly, features and Aerotech’s EasyTune® is one among these. EasyTune is the most sophisticated autotuning tool available in a commercial motion controller. Being entirely data-driven, the algorithm mostly simulates the process followed by an experienced controls engineer. A lot of available tuning techniques depend on “rules-of-thumb” or basic model-fitting that ignore nonlinear behavior or machine resonances. On the other hand, EasyTune® directly measures and offsets these effects.

It assumes no previous knowledge of the system properties, and starts with a system identification operation. It continues with the development of a baseline stabilizing controller followed by increasingly more sophisticated compensation through loop-shaping procedures. The final controller has the highest bandwidth practical for that specific stage system.

In other words, users only need to press “Start” and watch EasyTune do all of their work.

Graphically Create Complex Trajectories With Ease

It can be a daunting task to create and program complex trajectories. That is the reason why a simple and easy-to-use program called Motion Designer was created by Aerotech. Motion Designer, included with all Q-Series piezo drives, enables the user to create complete trajectories graphically in an easy and intuitive manner. As the plotting and analysis abilities are built-in, the Motion Designer application enables the user to program and troubleshoot complex trajectories with remarkable speed.

Trigger Events Based On Actual Stage Position

External events such as laser firing, image capture, or data acquisition, based on actual stage position can be triggered using Position Synchronized Output (PSO) by Aerotech. Many contending controllers necessitate event-based triggering in the time-domain or based on the commanded stage position, which requires very low-latency, high-accuracy timing as well as very good velocity tracking of the motion system. Using Aerotech's PSO, the external event is set off of the actual stage position based on a stored array or window resulting in a much simpler integration and a more accurate process.

Position Synchronized Output (PSO)

Regardless of the type of application, Aerotech’s extensive experience and expertise developed over years of studying advanced motion control are at customers’ service. Customers can contact one of Aerotech’s Application Engineers at any time to discuss how their process can be optimized.
