MEMSIC Launches Thermal MEMS-Based Two-Axis Digital Accelerometer

MEMSIC has unveiled the world’s smallest, completely-integrated MEMS two-axis digital accelerometer called the MXC6226XC.

The MXC6226XC, which employs MEMSIC’s proprietary MEMS thermal accelerometer technology that has no moving components is fabricated utilizing 0.18 µm CMOS technology and sophisticated wafer- level packaging. The novel device offers economical sensing solutions to cost-conscious devices such as games, toys, mobile phones, appliances and cameras.

The digital accelerometer allows designers to improve their product value considerably by delivering superior functionality and performance. It is an ideal alternative to designs using mechanical switches that have less capability and reliability. The device’s compact size of 1.2 x 1.7 x 1.0 mm and its ball grid array package offer more options to designers for incorporation into space-efficient designs.

The MXC6226XC comprises far-reaching signal conditioning circuitry, which includes digital signal processing, to offer optimal motion sensing performance. It can survive extremely high shocks at the magnitude of up to 50,000g, which is five-folds higher than that of capacitive accelerometers, making it suitable for applications in mobile phones, toys and other devices that are subjected to being hit onto hard surfaces.

The two-axis accelerometer can sense vibration and four positions of orientation, and can gauge acceleration on a ±2 g range and on an absolute 0 g offset of below ±50 mg. It has an interrupt pin for the detection of orientation and vibration and an I2C interface for communication and power-down capability. Its operating temperature ranging between −20° C and +70° C and operating voltage range is 2.5 to 5.5 V.
