Chongqing University Signs Collaboration Agreement with Carl Zeiss

In parallel to the official opening of its Electron Microscopy Collaboration Lab (EMCL), Chongqing University has inked a Collaboration Agreement with Carl Zeiss SMT, a global leader in innovative lithography optics, optical and particle-beam based analysis and measuring systems. The Agreement formalizes a partnership which is set to open up new opportunities in nano-materials and materials research. With this partnership, Carl Zeiss SMT adds a further leading academy and research facility to its growing network of electron microscope centres that are hosting high-end transmission electron microscopes in their laboratories like Harvard University in USA or Max-Planck-Institut in Germany.

The EMCL will be established under the Material Science Research Institute of Chongqing University, lead by Prof. Liu Qing. The Material Science Research Institute has been awarded as First Level Key Discipline, having a group of talents for research and development in the fields of electron microscopy, including Prof. Zhu Jing, Academician of the China Academy of Science and the Chief Advisor of Electronic Speculum Center. The primary equpiment of the EMCL is a ZEISS LIBRA 200 Transmission Electron Microscope, which has been delivered earlier in 2009.

“We look forward to extend our collaboration with Carl Zeiss,” stated Prof. Liu Qing, Chair of Chongqing University´s School of Materials Science and Engineering. “This is an important part of our continuous effort to strengthen our position as a regional electron microscopy centre. With the addition of this state-of-the-art equipment to our lab, we will now be able to study physical substances for new materials at a higher resolution in the future.”

“We are proud to be chosen by Chongqing University as a partner in order to support the University´s research programmes and to develop its position as one of the leading regional academic institutions for materials research,” said Manfred Hanke, Managing Director of Carl Zeiss SMT, Singapore. Guido Bauhammer, head of Carl Zeiss SMT´s operations in China, adds: “The partnership with Chongqing University is the next logical step for us after having setup our local sales and service organisation in 2008 to provide excellent support to our customers in China for SEM, TEM and FIB technology.”

In addition to the machine installation, Carl Zeiss and Chongqing University will also collaborate in the fields of application development and training programmes. Chongqing University staff and students will be able to network with advanced group users of Carl Zeiss systems and gain access to state-of-the-art instrument around the world.
