Lab-on-a-chip and microfluidics technology scientist, Dr. Dongqing Li had invented the device. The commercially ready handheld device has a weight below 1.5 lbs. Reagents consumption and sample size is drastically decreased to only 5~10 µL. The easy-to-operate equipment is suitable for field and point-of-care applications and for DC or AC operation.

With its portability, precision and speed, the novel device is suitable for a variety of diagnostic applications, including sperm and genetics selection and sorting, tumor chemotherapy and immunology, transplantation, hematology, gene and stem cell therapy, drug doping tests, drug discovery, leukemia and cancer. It is also capable of determining CD4, a particular white blood cell type, for detecting HIV infection and determining bacteria in food samples.

The patent-pending flow cytometer technology is also suitable for non-FDA regulated markets that are not applicable for traditional flow cytometers. For instance, it can be utilized as an inexpensive instrument in myriad biology and medical labs for infection disease detection at the borders, environmental tests, infertility tests, food safety tests, scientific research and diagnosis of HIV infection in under-developed nations.

Diagnostic Chips is anticipating a notice of allowance from the United States Patent and Trademark Office very soon. Wistron, an electronics OEM company based in Taiwan, manufactures the commercially ready equipment of the portable flow cytometer lab-on-a-chip technology.
