Electron and Ion Beam Imaging and Analysis Equipment North American Headquarters For Carl Zeiss SMT Moves To Peabody, Mass.

Carl Zeiss SMT Inc., a leading global provider of electron- and ion-beam imaging and analysis equipment and services, today announced that it has successfully moved its North American headquarters from Thornwood, N.Y. to a new facility in Peabody, Mass., located close to the city of Boston.

The move goes along with the operational integration of ALIS Corporation, Peabody, Mass., a technology start-up developing Helium ion microscopy, which was acquired by Carl Zeiss SMT in 2006. The newly formed North American headquarters cover the full range of operations. This includes research and product development, manufacturing and application development as well as sales, system demonstration and service of Carl Zeiss SMT´s market leading product portfolio of nanoscale imaging, structuring and analysis solutions. The new 53,000 square foot state-of-the-art facility of Carl Zeiss SMT Inc. houses a 14,000 square foot development and manufacturing plant, plus a new state-of-the-art application development and system demonstration laboratory. Here, up to six of the latest generation systems — including EVO® and ULTRA type scanning electron microscopes, NVision 3D CrossBeam® workstations, LIBRA® energy-filter transmission electron microscopes and the revolutionary ORION™ Helium ion microscope — can be operated and evaluated by customers in context of their various applications in nanotechnology. Customers are welcome to bring their samples to this facility and experience the superior performance of the ZEISS electron- and ion-optical systems.

“We are very proud of the successful move and integration of our U.S. manufacturing, development, sales, applications, and customer support operations into our new, expanded facilities in Peabody, Massachusetts,” said Frank P. Averdung, president of Carl Zeiss SMT Inc. “Now, we are better positioned than ever to provide a world class experience in nanoscale imaging, structuring and analysis for all our customers from first contact through joint research and development programs, applications development, equipment sales, and mutually beneficial support relationships.” Averdung, who joined Carl Zeiss SMT in 2005 from the semiconductor device and manufacturing equipment industry, commented further: “The Boston area offers highly qualified personnel and support resources, including a quality supply chain for high-tech manufacturing and R&D, coupled with a very active scientific and industrial infrastructure for nanotechnology applications in life sciences, advanced materials and semiconductor processing and metrology. We intend to continue ramping our capabilities in Peabody, quickly, as part of our global growth plans and our commitment to total customer satisfaction. Together with the experienced management team of our newly integrated ALIS technology division, we will focus, in particular, on the successful market introduction and the first system shipments of our ORION™ Helium ion microscope during 2007.”
