Sparta Armor Places Initial Commercial Order for NaturalNano’s Halloysite Natural Tubes

New York-based nanomaterials company, NaturalNano has received its first commercial order from nanotechnology-based defence material manufacturer, Sparta Armor.

Halloysite Nano Tubes

The order is for NaturalNano’s proprietary Halloysite Natural Tubes (HNT) for use in Sparta Armor’s body armor and vehicle protection products. The two companies entered into a Joint Development and Supply Agreement that was implemented in January 2012.

Jim Wemett, CEO of NaturalNano, stated that the company was proud to work together with Sparta Armor to improve the already optimized performance of its armor products that play a significant role in the safety of defense and police personnel. Sparta’s specialty is blast and ballistic shielding products made using nanotechnology resulting from sponsored research carried out through DARPA’s Defense Science Office (DSO), Department of Defense (DOD) and leading defense contractors. Sparta’s work in ballistic and blast protection involves load reduction for the war fighter and vehicles program. The persisting challenge has been to find a dispersible and extremely reliable nanoscale additive for their products.

J.J. Wendell, CEO of Sparta Armor, stated that their work with NaturalNano has resolved the challenges they have faced in this aspect as the integration of NaturalNano’s naturally occurring HNT into their ballistic panels as a replacement for the heavy, expensive and fragile ceramic plates has increased the yield strength of the panels with the elongation properties maintained intact.
