Gold Nanoshells and their Applications

Due to their plasmonic properties, gold and silver nanoparticles are widely employed across a spectrum of applications, ranging from diagnostics to molecular detection, as well as in therapies like photothermal and microwave-based treatments and nanotoxicology.

Colloidal silver nanoparticles are utilized in antimicrobial coatings, electronics, photovoltaics, and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). Colloidal gold nanoparticles, on the other hand, are applied in lateral flow assays (immunochromatographic assays) and serve as TEM labels and size standards.

Merck's gold nanoshells are nanoparticles with surface plasmon resonance (SPR), comprising a nanoscale silica core enveloped by an ultra-thin gold shell. By adjusting the ratio of the core diameter and the shell thickness, the absorption and scattering properties of the nanoshells can be tuned across the visible and near-IR (NIR) regions.

Increasing the size of the silica core and reducing the thickness of the gold shell shifts the plasmon resonance toward the NIR region.

This class of plasmonic nanoparticles has diverse applications, including optical filters, sensing, and cancer therapy. To enhance steric stability, the gold nanoshells are coated with PVP (40 kD polyvinylpyrrolidone).

Storage and Stability

Avoid freezing. Store at 2–8 °C when not in use to prolong shelf life. Nanomaterials may be sensitive to extremes of pH and high salt concentrations. Exercise caution when altering environmental conditions, as changes may lead to particle aggregation.
