The Sustainable Nano-Manufacturing Workshop is an Invitation Only event to be held in Melbourne on the 23rd and 24th February 2008.
The Workshop is co-sponsored by the Australian Research Council (ARC) and the USA National Science Foundation (NSF). The ARC National Nanotechnology Network and the ARC Advanced Materials Network are key facilitators of the event, which will be held just prior to the International Conference On Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (ICONN) from the 25th - 29th February 2008.
The Workshop aims to bring together a selected group of internationally known experts and decision makers from industry, government and academia to discuss sustainability issues related to nano-manufacturing. Emphasis will be on the issues and opportunities related to resource utilisation and availability in general, and the long-term issues of strategic materials, water and energy usage as well as potential environmental impacts of nano-manufacturing.
The Workshop will consist of overview presentations by experts, workshop sessions, panel presentations with discussions and focus meetings. Speakers will address aspects of sustainable nano-manufacturing including international and multi-disciplinary perspectives on:
- Unique requirements of nano-manufacturing; major differences and paradigm changes when manufacturing moves from existing scale to nano-scale
- Water and energy use in current and upcoming nano-manufacturing
- Metrology, instrumentation, and process control requirements and challenges for manufacturing at nano-scale
- Potential environmental challenges due to emissions and use of new chemicals
- Nano-particle HS&E workplace issues as well as beyond manufacturing sites
- Design for sustainability and environmental responsibility applied to nano-manufacturing
- Social issues and perception in relation to the application and impact of nano-technology
- Unique educational and training needs of scientists and engineers working in nano-technology industries
- Waste management and control issues in nano-manufacturing
- Nano-manufacturing paradigms – Bottom up/Top down.
