SUNY CNSE’s Hands-on Nanotechnology-Based Summer Internship Program Admits Record Number of Students

The newly merged SUNY College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering (CNSE) / SUNY Institute of Technology (SUNYIT) announced its largest-ever Summer Internship Program class during an orientation program held Monday, June 2. The class of 58 students includes both undergraduates and high school students, a majority of whom reside in New York State.

Throughout the ten-week course, the student interns will be immersed in CNSE’s hands-on nanotechnology-based learning environment where they will work closely with leading CNSE researchers to explore nanoscale concepts and gain unmatched high-tech workforce skills and know-how.

“We are delighted to see the growing interest in this prestigious internship experience, just one of the opportunities available to students as a result of Governor Andrew Cuomo’s high-tech workforce pipeline,” said Dr. Alain Kaloyeros, Chief Executive Officer and Officer in Charge of the newly merged SUNY CNSE/SUNYIT Institution. “This powerful CNSE program offers students, from across New York State and around the world, a summer-long engagement that provides exciting, nanotechnology-based research projects, highlighting the state’s globally recognized status as the epicenter for innovation-focused educational experiences.”

The undergraduate students who were accepted into the program have an average GPA of 3.7 and were chosen from more than 150 applicants. A majority of summer interns taking part in the 2014 program are currently enrolled at a number of State University of New York (SUNY) schools, including CNSE, Binghamton University, Hudson Valley Community College, the University at Albany, the University at Buffalo, and Stony Brook University. Other students in the program currently attend colleges and universities that include Cornell University, Harvard College, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Rochester Institute of Technology, and Tufts University, among others. Emphasizing the importance of the Summer Internship Program and the unique educational opportunities that CNSE offers, thirty-two of the fifty-eight students are currently CNSE undergraduates who decided to seek additional nanotechnology-focused skills to complement those they are already gaining through the NanoCollege’s unparalleled undergraduate programs. Of the high school students awarded CNSE internships, one is a junior from Voorheesville, NY and the other is a senior from Manlius, NY, who will begin undergraduate studies at CNSE in the fall.

The 10-week program offers real-world experience and students are able to utilize CNSE’s state-of-the-art, $20 billion facilities. While the interns will explore a specific area of in-depth study, the program also emphasizes a multidisciplinary approach by teaching cutting-edge concepts in the areas of nanoscience, nanoengineering, nanobioscience, and nanoeconomics that are fast becoming the keys to unlocking career opportunities in New York State’s rapidly expanding innovation economy.

As part of the unique Summer Internship Program experience, students will be able to work side-by-side with leading CNSE faculty members who act as one-on-one mentors. Additionally, the students will gain a broader understanding of the concepts behind nanotechnology and its many applications through attendance at a number of seminars focused on cutting-edge nanotechnology-based research topics. As part of the program’s capstone, each intern will showcase the results of his or her individual investigation by presenting a research poster.

Including this latest class of interns, more than 300 students have now participated in the program since its inaugural year in 2004.
