Harnessing The Quantum World By Catching, Controlling and Using Ultracold Atoms

Wired is reporting on what may be the key to quantum supercomputers, extra-sensitive measuring devices, navigation systems and even fully understanding the origins of the universe.

The branch of science they are invesigating is ultracold physics. The physicists are able to super cool atoms to near absolute zero and then harness their quantum properties.

The researchers shoot photons of the right wavelength at individual atoms, slowing them down. The slowed atom has low energy and is analogous to a supercooled atom. In this state the quantum-variable states can be controlled to make quantum computer processors with powers far beyond our binary-based chips.
