The problem of water shortages in the Middle East has been given an initial helping hand with leaders of the nanotechnology industry in Israel joining together for the first meeting of stakeholders in the Nanotechnology Clean Water Initiative. The initiative is the combined vision of Dr. Uri Sagman, Prof. Samuel Pohoryles and former prime minister Shimon Peres to make Israel the world leader in nanoscience-based clean water technologies.

The participants are looking to create:

  • nanomaterials to improve solar energy production by increasing the efficiency of photocatalytic and chemical processes
  • nanoscale filter membranes
  • in situ reduction of groundwater pollution
  • nano-biosensor to monitor contaminants
