Thirty students from the Albany, Schenectady and Troy City School Districts participated in a tree-planting ceremony at the College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering ("CNSE") of the University at Albany on July 31 to mark the completion of the first-ever Institute of Nanoscale Technology and Youth ("INTY") Summer Workshop.
The pilot program, which is aimed at engaging young people in the pioneering fields of nanoscale science and engineering, represents a partnership between CNSE and the Center for Urban Youth and Technology ("CUYT") at the University at Albany. INTY is designed to serve all youth, but with a clear focus on underrepresented, underserved and economically disadvantaged youth and adult populations.
The students spent three weeks on-site at the UAlbany NanoCollege, participating in a variety of interactive laboratory and cleanroom projects related to silicon wafer processing, nanobiomaterials and emerging energy technologies. They also took part in a unique nanobusiness forum, and worked with CNSE faculty on hands-on activities ranging from digital information processing to RF-controlled model airplanes. In addition, students had the opportunity to interact with CNSE's industry and community partners through a lunchtime speakers' series to learn more about science and technology-related careers and the impact of nanotechnology on their community.
A closing ceremony held that evening included a poster presentation at which students displayed the results of projects on which they worked, followed by a dinner and awards ceremony.
