UAlbany NanoCollege professor Dr. Fatemeh (Shadi) Shahedipour-Sandvik was among eight women honored by the Albany-Colonie Regional Chamber of Commerce as a Woman of Excellence at a luncheon on June 28, 2007.
Dr. Shahedipour-Sandvik, an assistant professor of nanoengineering who was recognized in the category of emerging professional, joined the College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering in 2001, leading the construction of a new university laboratory for the study of III-Nitride compound semiconductors.
She has initiated a number of projects through which she collaborated closely with several industry partners and national laboratories. These projects have focused largely on the study of semiconductor materials development and their impact on the performance of optoelectronic devices such as light emitting diodes and photodetectors.
Recently, she successfully concluded a project to develop an excitation light source for a bio-agent detection system, funded by the Department of Homeland Security, as well as a project to develop a hyper-spectral photodetector, funded by NASA. These hyperspectral detectors can be used for antiterrorism activities.
Dr. Shahedipour-Sandvik was awarded the Governor's 2005 Woman of Excellence Award for her professional accomplishments and contribution to the community and the Rising to Lead Award by the Alliance of Technology and Women in 2006.
Dr. Shahedipour-Sandvik came to the U.S. from her home country of Iran as a graduate student in 1993. She obtained her Ph.D in experimental solid state physics from the University of Missouri-Columbia in 1998.
