Broadcom Corp Ships 65 nm Single-Chip GbE Switch Solutions to Major OEM Customers

Broadcom Corporation (Nasdaq: BRCM), a major technology innovator and global leader in semiconductors for wired and wireless communications, today announced that its family of 65 nanometer (nm) single-chip Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) switch solutions for small-to-medium-sized business (SMB) applications are now shipping in volume production to major OEM customers including Allied Telesis, Cisco, D-Link and NETGEAR. This highly integrated switch family includes 5-, 8-, 16- and 24-port configurations, with full Layer 2 (L2) switching, to address the feature set and port density requirements of today's SMB networks.

Broadcom's green SMB switches provide an impressive reduction in total system power -- as much as 40 percent -- and can help reduce overall system cost by eliminating the need for a fan and enabling the use of a less costly power supply. As a result, the Broadcom SMB switches can reduce power and enable a lower bill-of-materials (BOM) cost for GbE switches in the SMB market.

Broadcom's single-chip 65nm GbE SMB switch family, announced April 2008, consists of the BCM53310 series, for unmanaged and smart switches, and the BCM53118, for unmanaged switches and routers. A third product for wireless home routers and residential gateways, the BCM53115, was announced in November 2007 and rounds out the product family. For the eco-conscious consumer, this family provides 'green' networking by enabling features such as automatic shut down of GbE ports that are not in use, and automatic adjustment of power levels based on cable length. Broadcom SMB switch products also use materials that are free of toxins.

"Broadcom's green SMB switches deliver business-class networking at price points that are appealing to the cost-sensitive SMB market," said Hanh Nguyen, Director of Marketing, Broadcom's SMB Switching line of business. "Green technology is also a major requirement in this market, and we are able to offer an environmentally-friendly product that not only dramatically reduces power consumption, but also lessens the overall impact on the environment."

"Green networking is a growing trend that is impacting all segments of the network," said Jun Kohara, Vice President of Marketing at Allied Telesis. "Small-business will benefit greatly from green networking due to cost savings enabled by products that operate more efficiently."

"The reduced power consumption offered by Broadcom's single-chip switch solutions results in an energy saving device with reduced operating costs." said Jacky Chang, Senior Director at D-Link. "As part of our D-Link Green™ initiative, we aim to give consumers ecologically friendly choices. By combining Broadcom's switch solutions with our green technology, we have been able to develop our second generation of Green Ethernet switches that provide competitive solutions with enhanced power saving benefits for all of our customers, from home users to enterprise."
