PARC (Palo Alto Research Center), a Xerox company, and a premier center for commercial innovation, today announced that Dr. Peter Pirolli, Dr. Ana Claudia Arias, and other leading scientists at PARC were significantly honored within their respective industries this year, ranging from social computing/collaboration systems to novel electronics.
Dr. Pirolli, a Research Fellow currently in the collective intelligence systems area at PARC, was elected as a Fellow to the American Psychological Association (APA) in 2010. Fellow status is an honor bestowed upon APA Members who have shown evidence of unusual and outstanding contributions or performance in the field of psychology and impacting it beyond a regional level. Dr. Pirolli is also a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Association for Psychological Science, the National Academy of Education, and the Association for Computing Machinery Computer-Human Interaction Academy. His contributions include the pioneering concepts and strategies behind information foraging theory, and most recently he was behind PARC's involvement in the technology-mediated social participation workshops funded by the National Science Foundation.
Dr. Arias currently manages PARC's printed electronic devices team, which uses inkjet printing techniques to fabricate organic, active-matrix display backplanes for flexible displays and sensors. She was just elected to the Material Research Society's Board of Directors, the highest governing body of the Materials Research Society. The Board is responsible for establishing policy, monitoring progress toward long-term goals, and setting the strategic directions for the Society's major activities, including meetings, publications, interactions with government agencies, and cooperative efforts with other professional societies throughout the world. Dr. Arias served as principal investigator for PARC's sensor-tape program for DARPA, and most recently, she was a key contributor to PARC's work with Thin Film Electronics.
This year Dr. Arias was also selected as one of eighty-six of the nation's brightest young engineers (ages 30 ' 45) performing exceptional engineering research and technical work in a variety of disciplines. As a result she took part in the National Academy of Engineering's (NAE) 16th annualU.S. Frontiers of Engineeringsymposium in September.
In other honors, PARC scientists are Technical Program Co-Chairs for the upcoming Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) Conferences on Human Factors in Computing Systems (CHI), the premier international conference for the field of human-computer interaction. PARC Principal Scientist and manager of PARC's ubiquitous and context-aware computing area Bo Begole is Technical Program Co-Chair of the 2011 conference themed 'Connecting', which will take place May 7 ' 12, 2011 in Vancouver, British Columbia. PARC Principal Scientist and area manager of PARC's collective intelligence systems area Ed Chi is Technical Program Co-Chair of the 2012 conference, which will take place in Austin, Texas.
