Nanowalls Growing Nanowires - New Technology

San Jose State University researchers have grown three-dimensional nanostructures on graphite and sapphire. The structures might eventually be used in energy and data storage.

They were able to construct a type of honeycomb wall structure with a wire rising from each wall junction. Each nanowall and nanowire is about 80 nanometers thick. The researchers found that by adding a thin gold film to the graphite or sapphire substrate, they were able to control growth rates by altering spacing and thickness of the gold catalyst.
