Optical Profiler - The ContourGT-X8 from Bruker

Eric Rufe from Bruker Nano Surfaces shows us their ContourGT-X8 optical profiler. It is effectively a 3-dimensional microscope and features the 10th generation of this technology.

The ContourGT-X8 is the top of the line optical profiler that features interferometry. Eric explains how the instrument works and how it is able to build up a 3-D map of the sample surface in short periods of time. In doing so the user is able to determine:

  1. Surface roughness
  2. Step heights
  3. Surface finish

While the x-y resolution is controlled by the field of view (about 4.5mm), the z-range is of the order of 10mm. Although the field of view is restricted, the instrument can build up large area maps by stitching together images using the motorized stage.

The ContoutGT-X8 is used in industries such as automotive, medical/implants and pharmaceuticals.
