Brookhaven's Center for Functional Nanomaterials Awarded LEED Silver Rating by USGBC

Two buildings on the 5,300-acre site of the U.S. Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory have each been awarded a LEED silver rating by the U.S. Green Building Council. LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. The two buildings - the 94,500 square-foot Center for Functional Nanomaterials (CFN) and the 65,000 square-foot Research Support Building (RSB) - are the newest on the Brookhaven Lab site.

Researchers Developed New Method to Fabricate Borosilicate Glass Nanoparticles

Researchers in Switzerland have developed a new method to fabricate borosilicate glass nanoparticles. Used in microfluidic systems, these "Pyrex"-like nanoparticles are more stable when subjected to temperature fluctuations and harsh chemical environments than currently used nanoparticles made of polymers or silica glass. Their introduction could extend the range of potential nanoparticle applications in biomedical, optical and electronic fields.
