The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Nanotechnology Standards Panel (NSP), serves as the cross-sector coordinating body for the purposes of facilitating the development of standards in the area of nanotechnology including, but not limited to, nomenclature/terminology; materials properties; and testing, measurement and characterization procedures, will hold a panel addressing standards for nanomedicine during its upcoming meeting on September 9, 2009, in Chicago.
The panel is being convened as a result of discussions at a March meeting of the ANSI- NSP, where members identified nanomedicine as an industry sector where the U.S. should take the lead in development of nanotechnology standards.
“Nanomedicine is a promising and rapidly expanding field resulting in a need for standards coordination efforts to facilitate its growth and impact,” said Clayton Teague, chairman of the ANSI-NSP and director of the National Nanotechnology Coordination Office (NNCO). “The U.S. has the opportunity to lead these efforts, taking the first steps needed to formulate relevant and market-driven standards to serve this area.”
Panelists at the September meeting will address:
- Priority areas for nanomedicine standards
- Standards already in existence that can be utilized in nanomedicine, if any
- Gaps in the existing set of standards
- Relevant stakeholder groups
- Impact that nanomedicine standards will have on existing regulation
Attendees will also discuss potential coordination with other medical-related standards activities, including: the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) Technical Committee (TC) 84, Devices for administration of medicinal products and intravascular catheters; ISO/TC 150, Implants for surgery; ISO/TC 194, Biological evaluation of medical devices; the California Nanosystems Institute; and others.
The panel will be facilitated by Martha Marrapese, chair of the Working Group (WG) 1, Terminology and Nomenclature of the U.S. Technical Advisory Group (TAG) to ISO/TC 229, Nanotechnologies. The nanomedicine panel will be held from 3:00 – 4:45 p.m. at the McCormick Place in Chicago, as part of the NSP’s September 9 meeting.
