Montana is a state located in the western region of the United States of America.  It covers a total area of 381,154 km2, and has a population of 1,004,441 as of 2012.

The state’s GDP in 2011 was $37,990 million. While Montana is probably best known for it's tourism, mining and agriculture, it is also proud to boast thriving technology and biotechnology sectors, as well as innovative energy developments. Manufacturing is also a significant contributor to the local economy.

Academic institutions offering courses and research programs in nanoscience and nanotechnology in Montana are listed below:

Montana Microfabrication Facilityis an initiative of the Montana State University. Its facility offers users an opportunity to schedule for training on the specific tools necessary for their project after meeting certain protocol. It also publishes a monthly journal called Nature Nanotechnology.

Center for Bio-Inspired Nano-Materials – is also an initiative of Montana State University. It offers multidisciplinary research and education opportunities focused on utilizing and expanding fundamental understanding of the formation and hierarchical construction of biological materials such as viruses, cells, and biominerals (bones, teeth, seashells etc.).

Recent Developments

Researchers from the Montana Tech of the University of Montana, Butte, were involved in a recently published work on temperature dependence of electron magnetic resonance spectra of iron oxide nanoparticles mineralized in Listeria innocua protein cages’, along with a group of researchers from various universities across the U.S. Their paper was published in the Journal of Applied Physics in October 2012.

Montana is not nearly as involved in nanotechnology as many other US states. Hence, it is not anticipated to generate as many nano-related developments.
