Nanoscale Glass Fiber Measuring Method for Counting Atoms and Studying Quantum Physics

A research team led by Professor Arno Rauschenbeutel Vienna Center for Quantum Science and Technology, in partnership with the researchers at the Johannes Gutenberg University has developed an ultrasensitive method by controllably coupling single atoms to light within ultra-thin fiber glass having a thickness of 500 nm, paving the way to develop detectors that are capable of sensing ultra-trace amounts of materials.

Angela Zhang Wins Siemens Competition’s Individual Category Award for Nanotech-Based Cancer Treatment

At the George Washington University, Cupertino, California-based Monta Vista High School’s student, Angela Zhang has been awarded the Grand Prize of $100,000 for her project titled ‘Design of Image-guided, Photo-thermal Controlled Drug Releasing Multifunctional Nanosystem for the Treatment of Cancer Stem Cells’ in the Individual category of the 2011 Siemens Competition in Math, Science & Technology.

Fung Young Investigator Award for her contributions in the biomedical engineering field from the Bioengineering Division of the American Society of Mechanical Engineering.

In order to study the toxic effects on skin by zinc oxide nanoparticles, the commonly used ingredient in sunscreen products, a team of researchers from Switzerland and Australia has devised an optical method to quantitatively examine the zinc oxide nanoparticle concentration level at various skin depths.
