Bead Manipulation of RBC Using Optical Tweezers from JPK Instruments

This video shows the bead manipulation of red blood cell (RBC) using optical tweezers from JPK Instruments. A RBC is fixed to the floor of petri dish by two traps, where the third trap is used to stretch the cell membrane.

Three time-shared traps are generated with the 'Multiplexing' feature. The two traps pin down the red blood cell onto the surface, while the amine modified third trap bead pulls the cell membrane. Thus an external stress is applied onto the membrane. Deformation is done without destroying the cell.
