Tekniker-IK4 to Investigate Materials Based on Carbonaceous Nanoparticles

Tekniker-IK4 technology center has declared that it will participate in a new European Carbon Inspired Project to discover new materials related to carbon nanoparticles. The new materials will be used in several applications involved in automotives and construction segments.

Few of the applications that can be developed by means of the new value-enriched materials derived from carbon nanoparticles include a brake pedal capable of identifying pressure exerted by the driver's foot, a scratch-resistant paint with auto-repairing ability for vehicles, engine parts with auto-lubricating capability, a low cost fireproof building panel and highly efficient foam with thermal insulation properties.

The creation of new materials with improved features is a result of the concept that materials of nano-scale offer superior mechanical, electrical, magnetic and optical characteristics, enabling their utilization in several areas.

The project commenced its research work by this year by combining the expertise of several groups assembled into an association. The research bodies include the Basque centre, the Centre for Automotive Technology of Galicia (CTAG), the Association for Research into Plastics Materials (AIMPLAS), the Universidade de Aveiro and the Institut Polytechnique de Bordeaux.

In addition to encouraging research in the nanoparticles field, the project aims at building a network of conveyance between countries like Spain, Portugal and the south of France for supporting the application of these new nanomaterials within the construction and automobile segments.

The partnership network formed between both civic and private R&D organizations will serve to share facts to the firms. It will also advise firms in the southwest of Europe, in particular small and medium-level firms, about the building of new products and methods based on carbon nanoparticles.
