Carbon Solutions was founded in 1998 to take advantage of the progress and opportunities that are afforded by the new field of carbon nanotubes chemistry, and in the belief that the discipline imposed by the business environment on the research enterprise would facilitate the utilization of carbon nanotubes in advanced materials applications. In 1999 Carbon Solutions was the recipient of a National Science Foundation (NSF) Phase I Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Award in the area of Advanced Materials and Manufacturing. In October of 2001 Carbon Solutions was awarded an NSF Phase II Award from the NSF Division of Design, Service and Manufacturing for the commercialization of soluble single-walled carbon nanotubes. These materials are the subjects of a number of patent filings by the University of Kentucky [US Patents 6,187,823 (2001); 6,331,252 (2001) have issued], and these patents have been licensed by Carbon Solutions.
