Scientists Confine Both Light and Sound to the Same Nanoscale Waveguide Core

Scientists from Ghent University and imec announce today that they demonstrated interaction between light and sound in a nanoscale area. Their findings elucidate the physics of light-matter coupling at these scales – and pave the way for enhanced signal processing on mass-producible silicon photonic chips.

Confocal Microscope Helps Predict Non-Linear Optical Properties of Metamaterials

Researchers at the University of California Berkeley and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) used a new theory for non-linear light scattering to show that non-linear optical properties of metamaterials can be predicted easily. The study has been described in the journal Nature Materials.

Berkeley Lab researchers have developed a nano-sized optical antenna that can greatly enhance the spontaneous emission of light from atoms, molecules and semiconductor quantum dots. This advance opens the door to light-emitting diodes (LEDs) that can replace lasers for short-range optical communications, including optical interconnects for microchips, plus a host of other potential applications.
