Applied Biosystems AB SCIEX QTRAP 5500 Mass Spectrometry System Earns Scientists' Choice Award

Applied Biosystems, a division of Life Technologies (NASDAQ:LIFE), and its mass spectrometry joint-venture partner, MDS Analytical Technologies, a business unit of MDS Inc. (TSX:MDS) (NYSE:MDZ), today announced that the AB SCIEX QTRAP® 5500 System, a unique, next-generation mass spectrometer, has received the Scientists' Choice Award for Best New Spectroscopy Product by SelectScience.net, a leading online resource for applied chemists, clinical chemists and life scientists. This award was based on the results of an independent poll of more than 25,000 scientists, who were asked to nominate and vote for their favorite new spectroscopy products.

The AB SCIEX QTRAP 5500 System is the only system on the market that combines qualitative and quantitative analysis capabilities in a single system. This uniquely enables scientists to identify and confirm a greater number of compounds, proteins and contaminants in a single analysis, rather than having to utilize two different technologies to achieve the same results. This system was developed as a powerful tool for the increasing number of scientists who are adopting mass spectrometry for a wide variety of laboratory applications, such as drug discovery, food testing, environmental analysis and the study of diseases.

“SelectScience is honored to present Applied Biosystems/MDS Analytical Technologies with the Scientists’ Choice Award for Best New Spectroscopy Product of 2008,” said Kerry Parker, Editor of SelectScience.net. “This new system clearly has captured the imagination of the scientific community as evidenced by its tremendous popularity in such a brief period on the market. The Scientists’ Choice Award provides a unique channel for the online community to voice opinions, and provide feedback to manufacturers, about which new products have significantly contributed towards laboratory research efforts.”

The AB SCIEX 5500 System, which was launched in October of last year, is the newest addition to the comprehensive portfolio of industry-leading LC/MS/MS mass spectrometry systems, software and workflow applications from Applied Biosystems/MDS Analytical Technologies. For qualitative analysis, this system features a new innovation in ion trap technology known as Linear Accelerator™ Trap, which is combined with industry-leading triple quadrupole capabilities used for quantitative analysis to create an innovative, one-of-a-kind system.

“Scientists are seeking best-in-class mass spectrometry solutions to help drive new discoveries and improve health and safety,” said Laura Lauman, President of Life Technologies’ Mass Spectrometry Systems Division. “The Scientists’ Choice Award for the AB SCIEX QTRAP 5500 System confirms that we have once again set a new standard for mass spectrometry instruments and that the scientific community is quickly embracing this unique technology.”

Andy Boorn, President of MDS Analytical Technologies, which developed the award-winning instrument, added: “The AB SCIEX QTRAP 5500 System is one of the most advanced mass spectrometry systems ever built. We designed it based upon feedback from the scientific community regarding what they needed a next-generation mass spectrometry platform to achieve; therefore, this award validates our approach to developing breakthrough technologies that are truly differentiated from other available systems.”
