Amendment II Unveils Carbon Nanotube Compound for Body Armor Applications
Amendment II has announced the availability of RynoHide, a first-of-its-kind carbon nanotube compound for shrapnel and ballistic resistant products, for public consumers and the personal protection equipment industry.
RynoHide is lighter in weight when compared to other compounds but delivers superior protection to users against back-face deformation of projectiles. The flexible ballistic compound is engineered to fulfill the requirements of all law enforcement and military operations. It was a result of a partnership deal signed in 2011 by Amendment II and the Nano Institute of the University of Utah to develop carbon nanotubes for body armor applications.
Carbon nanotubes are ultrathin materials and have a strength that is five folds higher than that of steel. RynoHide exploits the potency of carbon nanotechnology in tandem with conventional soft body armor components. It helps in producing stronger flexible armor. The National Institute of Justice has set 44 mm as the acceptable limit for back-face deformation for body armor. With RynoHide, body armor can maintain its weight and attain a back-face deformation in the low 30’s range, which means less harm to the body.
Amendment II exclusively develops carbon nanotube-based ballistic resistant compound for body armor applications using a complex and highly technical production process. Carbon nanotubes are applied to the components of RynoHide at the thread level. RynoHide compounds are used in vehicle armor, law enforcement and military uniforms, lightweight armor systems, and in structural applications. It can also be used in several other applications.
