UNM Unveils High-tech Microscope - New Product

The University of New Mexico has unveiled a new scanning electron microscope that is capable of previously unprecedented resolutions.

The microscope is a new $800,000 Hitachi S-5200 - the most advanced scanning electron microscope available. Abhaya Datye, director of UNM's Center for Micro-Engineered Materials and a professor of chemical and nuclear engineering says UNM is the first university in the United States to have the microscope.

The microscope will be made available to UNM researchers and scientists as well as academics from other state universities and private researchers. Offsite researchers can send samples to the UNM scanning electron microscope laboratory and download data from the microscope at full resolution.

The purchase was enabled by a grant from the National Science Foundation Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR) as well as funds from the state of New Mexico and UNM.
