Heat of combustion is determined by burning a weighed sample in an oxygen bomb calorimeter under controlled conditions. The calculation is based on temperature readings taken before, during, and after combustion, with appropriate adjustments for thermochemical and heat transfer corrections. Either isothermal or adiabatic calorimeter jackets may be used.

As a true isoperibol calorimeter, the K88990 (along with the K88900) maintains a constant-temperature jacket around the combustion bomb and bucket. During combustion, the bucket and bomb temperature rise, while the surrounding jacket remains stable. A microprocessor-based controller continuously monitors both the bucket and jacket temperatures, applying real-time heat leak corrections throughout the test. This dynamic correction approach offers greater accuracy compared to methods that apply adjustments only after the test.
The removable bomb design is a traditional setup familiar to many users. In this configuration, the bomb and bucket are taken out of the calorimeter for sample loading and for filling the bucket with a precisely measured amount of water, which absorbs the heat released during combustion.
