Embedded Systems Week Highlights Leti and Grenoble's Depth of Expertise in the Field

Leti, a leading global research center committed to creating and commercializing innovation in micro- and nanotechnologies, said today that more than 300 engineers, researchers and industry leaders from around the world are expected to attend Embedded Systems Week, Oct. 11-16, in Grenoble's World Trade Center.

ESWeek is the world's premier technical event on embedded systems, and Leti, a leading center for embedded systems R&D, is the local organizer of week-long event. Grenoble and the Rhône-Alpes region are an appropriate setting for ESWeek, which is held in a different venue every year. The region is known for its concentration of high-level expertise in embedded systems because of the effective transfer of technology between researchers, schools and industry. The embedded systems industry directly accounts for more than 60,000 jobs in Rhône-Alpes, including 35,000 in Grenoble.

This year's gathering will feature presentations, tutorials and workshops on various aspects of embedded systems research and development and markets. In addition, three leading conferences in embedded systems will take place Oct. 12-14 in Grenoble, allowing ESWeek attendees to choose from a wide range of topics. The three are:

  • CASES — International conference on Compilers, Architecture, and Synthesis for Embedded Systems
  • CODES+ISSS — International conference on Hardware/Software Co-design and System Synthesis, and
  • EMSOFT — International conference on Embedded Software

“Grenoble and the Rhône-Alpes region are a obvious choice to host ESWeek, the most significant event for the embedded systems industry,” said Laurent Malier, CEO of Leti. “The regional infrastructure in embedded systems, including Leti's recognized role as a center of embedded systems research, provides the perfect venue for this gathering.”

In addition to the three conferences, two special events will take place during the week: The Embedded Systems Exhibition, a dedicated exposition in which 25 members of Minalogic will present technical demonstrations resulting from collaborative projects, Oct, 14-15, organized by Minalogic, one of France's six world-class competitiveness centers; and the Embedded Linux Conference-Europe Oct. 15-16.

Highlights of ESWeek also include a full day on Oct. 14 devoted to embedded systems for industry, and presentations on the requirements, challenges and solutions from industry's point of view. Martin Nally, CTO of IBM Rational Software, will give a keynote address dealing with challenges for embedded systems design and productivity. One special session will include presentations on embedded system strategies from NXP, Thales and ST-Ericsson. A second special session will include presentations on different multicore computing platforms from STMicroelectronics, NEC, Infineon and ARM. A panel session moderated by Marco Cornero from ST-Ericsson will explore compilers for embedded systems platforms and discuss the most promising products and solutions on the market.

Highlights of Embedded Linux Conference-Europe will include presentations by three of the co-authors of “Building Embedded Linux Systems,” Jon Masters, Philippe Gerum and Gilad Ben-Yossef. Masters and Gerum will talk about recent trends in Linux development, including the state of real-time Linux — from two isolated kernels to a single pervasive real-time system. Linux consultant and writer Alessandro Rubini will talk about the use of the fast IRQ in ARM-Linux.
