ANL Places $1.3 Million Order with CVD for UHV Deposition System

CVD Equipment Corporation, a leading provider of standard and custom chemical vapor deposition systems, today announced that it has received a $1.3 Million order from Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) to manufacture an ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) deposition system for the growth of multilayer Laue lenses used for nanoscale imaging.

Tissue Decolorization Combined with Light-Sheet Fluorescent Microscopy Help Take Detailed Images of Individual Organs

Researchers at the RIKEN Quantitative Biology Center in Japan, together with collaborators from the University of Tokyo, have developed a method that combines tissue decolorization and light-sheet fluorescent microscopy to take extremely detailed images of the interior of individual organs and even entire organisms.

Researchers Observe Growth of Buckminsterfullerenes in Real Time

Researchers from Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Universität Tübingen, Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron (DESY) and Technische Universität Berlin have observed the self-arrangement of football-shaped carbon molecules into ultra-smooth layers, in real-time, using the PETRA III ultrabright X-ray source at DESY. This study provides insight into basics of the growth process that takes place in buckyballs.

Nanoparticles and Light Can Break Down BPA, Other Pollutants

Many pollutants with the potential to meddle with hormones — with bisphenol A (BPA) as a prime example — are already common in the environment. In an effort to clean up these pollutants found in the soil and waterways, scientists are now reporting a novel way to break them down by recruiting help from nanoparticles and light. The study appears in the journal ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces.

Graphene Nanopores with Built-in Optical Antenna

High-speed reading of the genetic code should get a boost with the creation of the world’s first graphene nanopores – pores measuring approximately 2 nanometers in diameter – that feature a “built-in” optical antenna. Researchers with Berkeley Lab and the University of California (UC) Berkeley have invented a simple, one-step process for producing these nanopores in a graphene membrane using the photothermal properties of gold nanorods.
