Atomic Force Microscopy and Ballistic Intracellular Nano-Rheology Provide New View of Cancer Cells

A team of student researchers and their professors from 20 laboratories around the country have gotten a new view of cancer cells. The work could shed light on the transforming physical properties of these cells as they metastasize, said Jack R. Staunton, a Ph.D. candidate at Arizona State University in the lab of Prof. Robert Ros, and the lead author of a paper reporting on the topic.

Six University of Rochester teams will advance to the New York Business Plan Competition statewide finals in Albany on April 26, where they will compete for $225,000 in cash and in-kind prizes. These teams represent diverse disciplines, hailing from the College of Arts and Sciences, the Eastman School of Music, the Hajim School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, and the Simon School of Business.

Transmission Electron Microscopy Helps Resolve Crystal Structure of Mineral Vaterite

By using state-of-the-art high-resolution transmission electron microscopy to examine crystals found in and on the bodies of small marine organisms called sea squirts, a team of scientists led by the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology has resolved the nearly 100 year-old mystery about the crystal structure of the mineral called vaterite. The findings are published in the current issue (April 26, 2013) of SCIENCE.
