The promise of repairing damaged hearts through regenerative medicine — infusing stem cells into the heart in the hope that these cells will replace worn out or damaged tissue — has yet to meet with clinical success. But a highly sensitive visualization technique developed by Stanford University School of Medicine scientists may help speed that promise’s realization.

University of Oregon chemists say that ultra-thin films of nickel and iron oxides made through a solution synthesis process are promising catalysts to combine with semiconductors to make devices that capture sunlight and convert water into hydrogen and oxygen gases.

NSF Awards Grant to Study Oxygen Consumption Rates of Individual Cells Using Photoacoustic Microscopy

When scientists study cells, they need to know how much oxygen each cell consumes to determine its metabolism. However, existing technology limits this study to groups of cells, not individual cells. Lihong Wang, PhD, plans to change that.

Better diagnosis and treatment of cancer could hinge on the ability to better understand a single cell at its molecular level. New research offers a more comprehensive way of analyzing one cell’s unique behavior, using an array of colors to show patterns that could indicate why a cell will or won’t become cancerous.

Bruker today announces the SkyScan 1272, an innovative high-resolution X-ray micro-CT (computed tomography) system, which can non-destructively visualize up to 200 Megapixel (14,450x14,450 pixels) virtual slices through objects.

SENTECH Report Sucessful Seminar on Plasma Processing in Berlin

More than 50 participants from industry, universities, and scientific institutions participated in SENTECH’s seminar “Plasma Process Technology” on February 28, 2013, in Berlin, Germany. The Seminar focused on issues of topical interest, including GaN processing, silicon nanostructuring, low temperature deposition of SiN, graphene components, and ALD barrier layers.

Researchers Use Atomic Force Microscopy to Show How Mechanical Forces Control Cell Regulation

Researchers have for the first time demonstrated that mechanical forces can control the depolymerization of actin, a critical protein that provides the major force-bearing structure in the cytoskeletons of cells. The research suggests that forces applied both externally and internally may play a much larger role than previously believed in regulating a range of processes inside cells.
